Format & guidelines for Cornish Cup 2024
Penzance Wheelers will be hosting the series.
The series will comprise of 10 time trial events over the 2024 season. These chosen events will be allocated Cornish Cup status. Two competitions will run side by side, one for solo riders, the other for clubs/teams.
Clubs/teams will need to register/affiliate to the Cornish Cup Series, each season, by paying a fee of to join event series. The fee is currently £30. All clubs must be CTT affiliated and be based in Cornwall.
Events can be CTT club or open events. After each event the organisers submit times for all the riders - we do not have separate road bike categories.
Money raised by fees will pay for website hosting, medals & trophies at end of season.
Points and Categories and clubs
Points will be gained at each event – 100 points for fastest in each category, Men, Women, Junior then 99 for 2nd fastest, 98 for 3rd fastest and so on down to 1 point.
The overall winner of each category will be the person, in each category, that accumulates the largest score from 6 events over the series.
Team prize at the end of the season will be calculated by taking the 3 highest scores from each club (from any category) from each of the 10 events – the winning team will be the one with the most points.
You do not need to ride all 10 events you will still be included in the overall points score.
Who can take part in the Cornish Cup
Riders who are first claim members of Cornish Cup affiliated clubs will be included in the points score.
Riders who are not first claim members of Cornish Cup affiliated clubs will not be included in the points score – however if they join an affiliated club part way through the series their points will only be included in the club points from the time they joined that club and not be added retrospectively.
You cannot switch clubs during the season for the Cornish Cup, we will take the club that you entered the first event with as the club your points will go towards at the end of the season, regardless of the club or team you finish the season a member of.
Juvenile riders will be entered into the Junior category.
Adult riders - If you are changing categories (because of age) over the course of the series - if you score points at the start of the Cornish Cup series in the category you start the series in then you will remain in that category for the purposes of the Cornish Cup until the end of the series - you can elect to disregard these points and ride in the upper age category once you pass your birthday - but you must notify the organisers of this. Your points in the club competition will remain in place.
We have allowed each affiliated club to nominate one Cornish resident cyclist, who is not a already a member of a Cornish Cup club, as a 2nd claim member.
They must be a fully paid up 2nd claim member of a Cornish Cup affiliated club - each club can only enter one 2nd claim member into the series and the nominated rider must have raced at least one event in Cornwall during the last season. If you think this is you then please contact one of the clubs and they will contact the organiser of the series to see if you can participate in the series.
Marshal duties
To encourage riders to help at events you can select one event to marshal or help out at in an official capacity (the race organiser must confirm if you have helped when results are published after the race) and you will receive points calculated on the average of your points in the other 5 highest scoring events.
Club/team prize
The Cornish Cup team prize will be awarded to the affiliated club with the highest points scored by their 3 highest scoring solo riders over the series of races – can be mix of age & gender categories.
We would encourage clubs to get as many women, juniors & juveniles involved as they are likely to be higher scoring than the main male category.
Solo prize
Riders highest 6 scores over 10 events for each category.
Categories are:
· Open *
· Female only
· Junior Open
· Junior Female only
. Vet Open **
. Vet Female only **
We will use the same classification for age/gender categories that CTT use. Juvenile riders will be included in the Junior category. If Junior or Vet categories winners also win the fastest overall they will be awarded that category and the 2nd fastest Junior or Vet will be awarded fastest for that category.
* Open category as per new CTT guidance on gender - this category winner will recieve the original Cornish Cup Trophy.
** There will also be a prizes based on VTTA standard timing.
There will be no allowance for different types of bikes in the overall team prize - but there will be an award at the end of the season for riders on road bikes that complete 6 of the 10 events.
Selecting Cornish Cup races
Once clubs have affiliated to the Cornish Cup and we have the 2024 calendar of club & open events, we will nominate the 10 events for the series. Where possible we would like clubs to suggest one of their events as a Cornish Cup event, all qualifying events must be before the planned awards ceremony at the end of the season. They can be open or club events and over any distance. It is not the winning time that matters only the finishing position. If we need to add or remove events, if we have too many or too few events we will do our best to make sure all clubs affiliated to the Cornish Cup are accommodated for. Final list of events will be published as soon as we can after the club event dates are fixed in early January.
Once the 2024 season commences
The important thing to do is to make sure that you have at least 3 qualifying riders for each event – so planning ahead is best!
If the nominated event is an open event, or requires pre entry, make sure your riders enter before the closing date. You can enter as many riders as you want in all off the events. We will make sure the event details are shared on all off our social media platforms as well as our websites – if you can also share event information on your own social media it’s always appreciated.
The Cornish Cup nominated events will be run as normal club or open time trials so will not appear any different to a usual event, but may be busier so please enter early if there are number restrictions.
If you have put yourself forward to be a volunteer for an event, you will receive the average score over the other 5 highest scoring events in the series as your points for the event you’ve helped out in. You can only gain points at 1 event when volunteering.
The organiser of the event will collate the results of the time trial (ideally in spreadsheet form – we will email spreadsheet templates for our preferred results format at the start of the season). The organiser will also notify us of any official volunteers that are taking part in the Cornish Cup.
Where possible we will use riders unique CTT ID number to collate results, if you don’t have an ID number we will create one for the purposes of the Cornish cup. Results will then be uploaded as quickly as possible onto the Cornish Cup website and shared on social media platforms. Once uploaded you will be able to view the points for that event and also the cumulative points gained over the series.
Awards ceremony
Awards and prizes will be presented at the end of the season - please follow our social media posts to see what venue we will use.
Disputes
Please note that the series is run by Penzance Wheelers (not any individual). Any disputes or queries should initially be made in by email to pzwheelers@gmail.com
If the issue cannot be resolved, to either parties’ satisfaction, we will then request a meeting with a maximum of 2 officials from each of the cycling clubs affiliated to the Cornish Cup to work out a solution. Please also remember that everyone involved in organising and running this series is a volunteer.
